What is swim 21?: The Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) is the Governing body for the sport of swimming in England. Swimming Clubs affiliated to the ASA must comply with it's rules and the laws of swimming.

To ensure that affiliated clubs offer quality swimming programmes, the ASA has developed a swimmer and club development model called Swim 21, which provides a benchmark to which clubs can measure themselves. Clubs that achieve all the standards are then accredited with SWIM 21 status.

What do clubs have to do? Meeting the Swim 21 standards is a long process. Colne Swimming Club began it's work on Swim 21 in 1999 with an audit of it's swimming program and the club structure. But after two years the application was lost at the ASA. The application was then found but the format had been changed. In 2003 we re-started the process. At the end of this process an action plan was submitted to the ASA for approval and to address areas needing attention. Throughout this year elements of the action plan have been implemented.

In August 2005 the Club was awarded Swim21 at the Silver Standard for Teaching. Then in November 2005 we were award Swim 21 at the Silver Standard for Skill Development.

In March 2010 the Club was awarded Swim21 at the Foundation - Masters/Swimming..

In September 2010 the Club was re-accredited Swim21 for Teaching, Skill Development and Masters in the Swimming Discipline..

In December 2013 the Club was re-accredited Swim21 club Essential. The process was done on-line using the ASAs new web portal. At the same time the old Teaching, Skill Development and Masters was phased out to be replaced with Swim21 club Essential. .

In September 2014 the Club was re-accredited Swim21 club Essential. The process was done on-line with much of the work done in the last 12 months still valid and could be re-used. .

How are clubs assessed? Following implementation of the action plan, clubs go through a self-assessment against a range of elements are required to score themselves against these criteria. The assessment and evidence are submitted to an ASA assessment panel for their consideration.
